Procedure Steps

Follow every step in order. Do not skip ahead. Do not combine steps.

Morning Foundation — Set the Intention (5 min)

Before you begin the virtue practice, write today's date at the top of a fresh journal page. Below it, copy one passage from Marcus Aurelius' Meditations. Choose a passage you haven't used in the last four weeks.

Under the passage, write: "Today I will practice being ___" — and fill in the virtue you need most right now. Not the one you're best at. The one you've been avoiding.

Tip: If unsure which virtue needs work, recall last week's biggest frustration. That's where the gap is.

Wisdom — Examine Your Impressions (10 min)

Write down three situations from the past week that provoked a strong reaction — anger, anxiety, excitement, frustration. For each one, answer two questions in writing:

Question A: "What actually happened — just the facts, no interpretation?"
Question B: "What story did I tell myself about what happened?"

The gap between A and B is where wisdom lives. Epictetus called this the "discipline of assent" — you don't have to agree with your first impression of anything.

IF / THEN Decision Point
IF you cannot separate fact from story → write both columns anyway, then circle the words that are interpretation (always, never, should, unfair). Those are the stories.
IF the situations feel too trivial to examine → that's the wisdom gap. Trivial reactions reveal character defaults. Examine them.

Courage — Name and Face One Fear (10 min)

Write down one thing you have been avoiding. A conversation, a decision, a commitment, a truth you haven't admitted. Be specific — "I need to tell Marcus that the project deadline is unrealistic" not "I need to be more honest."

Now write what you're actually afraid will happen. Then write what the Stoics would say: "The opinion of others is not in your control. Your character is."

Commit to taking one concrete action on this before the week ends. Write the action, the day, and the time. Put it in your calendar now.

Warning: Courage without action is just journaling. If you write it down but don't schedule it, you've completed a thought exercise — not a virtue practice.

Justice — Identify One Right Action (8 min)

Justice, for the Stoics, means giving each person their due and acting for the common good — not just following rules. Write answers to:

Who deserves better from me this week? (A colleague you dismissed, a friend you've been short with, a stranger you overlooked.)
What obligation am I neglecting? (Not a legal obligation — a moral one. Something you know you should do but haven't.)
Where am I taking more than I'm giving? (Time, attention, credit, resources.)

Pick the most uncomfortable answer. That's the one. Commit to one just action before your next weekly practice.

IF / THEN Decision Point
IF you can't think of anyone you've wronged → expand the circle. Family, community, future self. Someone is waiting for a fairness you haven't delivered.
IF the just action feels too costly → Marcus Aurelius wrote: "Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one." Do it anyway.

Temperance — Audit Your Excesses (7 min)

Temperance is moderation in all things. Review the past seven days and honestly note where you went to excess — or to deficiency. Check each category:

📱 Attention: How many hours on screens that added nothing?
🍽️ Consumption: What did you eat, drink, or buy that you didn't need?
🗣️ Speech: Did you talk more than you listened? Complain more than you acted?
😤 Reaction: Did you escalate when you could have paused?

Write one specific temperance practice for next week. Not "be less angry" — but "when I feel anger rising, I will take three breaths before speaking."

Tip: Seneca's evening review asked "What fault did I cure today?" not "What did I achieve?" The shift in question is itself a temperance practice.

Synthesis — Write Your Weekly Virtue Statement (3 min)

At the bottom of today's journal page, write one sentence that captures your commitment for the coming week. It must include at least two of the four virtues.

Example: "This week I will have the courage to deliver honest feedback and the temperance to do it without anger."

Example: "This week I will seek wisdom by reading before reacting, and practice justice by giving my full attention to my family each evening."

This sentence is your compass. Read it each morning. If by Wednesday you've forgotten it, the practice isn't integrated yet — that's data, not failure.

Close — Evening Review Preview (2 min)

Before ending this session, write three questions at the bottom of the page. These are for your evening review tonight — and every night until next week's practice:

1. "Where did I act according to my virtue statement today?"
2. "Where did I fall short?"
3. "What will I do differently tomorrow?"

Answer these each evening in 2-3 sentences. That's it. The weekly practice builds the framework; the daily review keeps it alive.

Critical: The evening review is not optional. Without it, this SOP becomes a weekly journaling session instead of a character-building system. Do it every night — even if it's two sentences on your phone before sleep.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to practice all four virtues equally every week. Some weeks demand more courage, others more temperance. Follow Step 1 honestly — lead with the virtue you need most. Forcing equal attention dilutes the practice.
  • Skipping the evening review after day two. The weekly session sets direction; the nightly review builds the muscle. Without it, you're reflecting once a week and reacting the other six days. That's not Stoicism — it's journaling.
  • Making the virtue statement vague. "Be a better person" is a wish, not a commitment. If your statement doesn't specify a situation, a behavior, and a virtue, it's too abstract to guide action. Rewrite it.
  • Treating justice as only about other people. The Stoics included justice toward yourself — giving yourself what you're due in rest, honest self-assessment, and fair expectations. Neglecting self-justice leads to burnout disguised as virtue.
  • Completing the SOP but not scheduling the courage action. Step 3 requires a calendar entry. If you write "I'll get to it" without a date and time, you've identified the fear but avoided it. That's the opposite of the exercise.
